Avoid These 4 Mistakes with Your Central Air

Avoid These 4 Mistakes with Your Central Air

South Carolina is known for the historic properties, beautiful beachfront, and great Southern hospitality; however, the heat and humidity also top the list. Central air conditioning makes it possible to be cool and comfortable in your South Carolina home all summer long. However, if it stops working and you must call an AC company for repairs, you could end up spending hundreds or thousands of dollars unexpectedly. Luckily, we’ve got a few tips and tricks you can follow to avoid calls to your local AC company.

  1. Don’t Skip Maintenance! Once a central AC unit is installed, some homeowners think they can just forget about the unit and their home will stay cool. Central AC units are durable, but they do need maintenance and upkeep to run efficiently. Some of the maintenance you should do includes changing the air filter, removing debris from the exterior unit, and duct cleanings.
  2. Size Matters-Central AC units that are too small will overwork and burn out quickly. Units that are too large won’t cool effectively or pull humidity out of the air. Make sure you talk to your AC company about the right size for the square footage of your home.
  3. Don’t Crank the Temperature Down-Turning the AC down to 60 degrees from 75 will not cause your home to cool faster. Your home cools at the same rate regardless of temperature and cranking your thermostat down only means higher energy bills and an overworked motor. Most homeowners forget to turn the thermostat back up which could mean walking into a frigid home.
  4. Not Fixing Small Repair-Home upkeep is expensive but ignoring problems with your HVAC system will leave you overheated in the summer and freezing in the winter months. Small problems always get bigger and don’t go away without being addressed. If you notice your home not cooling as well, the fan blowing loudly, or other problems, call an AC company for an inspection.

Replacing your central AC is almost always more expensive than fixing minor issues that can prevent a total breakdown. Maintenance on your central air is important and depending on the warranty you purchased during installation, you might even have maintenance covered for free!
