What is a ductless air conditioning system?

A ductless AC system is an AC system with two main components-an outdoor compressor/condenser and an indoor evaporator. A conduit that houses power cables, refrigerant tubing, suction tubing, and a condensate drain links the outdoor and indoor units. There are four ductless types: single-zone, pre-charged single-zone, hyper heat single-zone, and multi-zone. Each type is meant to provide different cooling controls for one area, or with a multi-zone, multiple areas.

  • Thermostat installation, maintenance, and inspection
  • Forced air system installation, maintenance, and repair
  • Ductwork inspection and repair

Common AC-related Issues:

  • Indoor air is stale or has a mold-like smell
  • Areas in your home will feel colder than others
  • Rising electricity bill
  • Pools of water appear under the ducts or drain tubes
  • The thermostat isn’t working
  • Your AC unit is suddenly much louder
  • Weak airflow

The components of a ductless system

A ductless AC system comprises these components:

Outdoor compressor

  • Compressor-Pressurizes refrigerant gas, converting it from a gas into a liquid. It also pumps liquid through refrigerant lines that run into the indoor unit
  • Condenser coils-Condenser coils release heat into the outside air, which is compressed into hot refrigerant vapor, which circulates into the coils and condenses into a liquid state.
  • Outdoor Fan-The fan blows over the condenser coils, cooling them down

Expansion valve- The valve allows high-pressure liquid refrigerant to expand immediately, cooling it down before entering the evaporator unit.

Indoor Evaporator

  • Evaporator coil-Cold refrigerant flows into the coil, absorbing heat, causing the refrigerant to evaporate into a gas and carry heat outwards
  • Blower-The blower draws in warm air and blows cool air back into the room
  • Air filter-Cool air goes through the air filter which catches any contaminants and allergens before they are circulated to you, improving the indoor air quality.

Central air versus ductless system

Both central air and ductless systems provide temperature control, but their methods are different. Central air has to regulate it in a large area, like a multi-room house, making it less efficient when regulating a particular area such as a single bedroom. In general, ductless systems are more efficient, flexible, and can be installed anywhere. However, they provide worse filtration and poor drainage as their fans are not very powerful. They also require more frequent maintenance due to their size. Central air systems can cover a wider area, have a lower initial cost than ductless systems, and can increase your property value. The tradeoff is that you will pay a hefty utility bill every month, your ductwork will require maintenance, and temperature control for individual rooms is less efficient than a ductless system.

How ductless air conditioning system works

Ductless AC units can be complicated systems to understand. Here is how the system functions and how you get cold air in your home:

  1. A compressed refrigerant in liquid form flows from the outdoor unit to the indoor unit through refrigeration lines
  2. When liquid refrigerant arrives in the evaporator coils, it expands and turns from liquid to gas.
  3. The indoor air blower sucks in warm indoor air and pushes it to cold coils, cooling the air and removing the humidity. This cool, dry air is circulated through the house and is what we experience as cool air
  4. The gaseous refrigerant now travels back to the outdoor unit
  5. The refrigerant is compressed in the outdoor unit and turned back into a liquid, removing the heat.
  6. Once the refrigerant is liquid again, it travels back into the indoor unit
  7. The cycle begins again

Ideal setup for ductless configuration

Small rooms; Garage, apartments, sunrooms
Small rooms can utilize a ductless perfectly as it won’t steal air from other rooms or overload your existing system

Downsizing for larger home
You can reduce your utility bill by incorporating more ductless units to add individual temperature controls and reducing the usage of a central air system.

Max's Fix-it 24/7 is phenomenal. I have a newer home (8 years) and I was told that both my units needed to be replaced. My neighbor recommended Max's Fix-it 24/7 Heating & Air and Rudy knows how to run a business. I had an issue that was caused by my maintenance man and because I was under the home warranty I was not charged for a visit. I promise no air conditioning is not a pleasant experience with the temperature this hot. My technician, Cody, was actually early, diagosed the issue in about two minutes and checked out everything giving me peace of mind as well. He was courteous, friendly and professional. I felt he gave me a thourough inspection as well. As a former Wendy's Franchisee I have dealt with the trades for over 30 years, please consider Max's Fix-it 24/7 Heating & Air for your HVAC needs.

FAQs

The short answer is no. Even if you understand the basic premise and are experienced with the technical aspects of the installation, AC units comprise multiple electrical components that add additional risk for the inexperienced.

It is not difficult to install if your ac unit is small, such as a single room or apartment. However, if you want a central AC system, this process is much more involved and complicated, involving manual labor and heavy equipment lifting.

Your air filters should be cleaned and inspected every 3 months to ensure proper performance.

Yes, a multi-split unit is difficult to install and should only be handled by a professional.

On average, an AC conditioner will last between 10-15 years. However, if properly maintained and with regular check-ups, some can even last up to 30 years.
